During the siege of Antwerp, the 2 regiments broke out and distinguished themselves on 25th and 26th August 1914 in action on the Willebroek Canal and, on 10th and 11th September 1914, were holding the front between Humbeek - Heuvel - Eversem.
After fall of Antwerp, the 21st Linie was dissolved.

(Dixmude – Merkem from mid-1915, Boesinge – Steenstraat from the Summer of 1916 to early 1917, Drie-Grachten – Steenstraat until Autumn of 1917, then on to Dixmude and the north)
(At the end of December 1916, the 21st Linie was again reformed and formed the 1st Brigade with the 1st Linie regiment; later, the 2e Jagers were added and the brigade became part of the 5e Infanteriedivisie.)
