In Brief...

Hugh Reginald Baily was born in Monmouth, Wales on 27th July 1892. At sometime, circa 1910,  he emigrated to Canada where he became a student of Agriculture at the McGill University between 1911 and 1912. He enlisted in the Army (5th Regiment, Royal Highlanders of Canada) on 22nd September 1914 at Valcartier, Quebec. At this time, his occupation was still recorded as "student" and he was a member of the active Militia.

He was promoted to Corporal in November 1914, but was reduced back to private on joining the 13th Bn CEF in December, prior to embarkation overseas.

He was Killed in Action on 24th April 1915 during the Battle of St.Julien (2nd Battle of Ypres ) and has no known grave. His name can be found on the Menin Gate memorial to the missing at Ypres.
