Seved south of Dieuze (Lorraine) until May 1915

1st May 1915 – promoted to Gefreiter (senior Private)

12th May 1915 – promoted to Unteroffizier (Corporal)

June 1915 – appointed Unteroffizier/ Offizier Aspirant

Served in French Flanders, Ypres Salient, Somme & Artois. Major battles – Somme & Messines

1st September 1916 – promoted to Leutnant

9th September 1916 – wounded near Fromelles

17th November 1916 – awarded Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2.Klasse

Kgl. Bayerisches 11. Infanterie-Regiment von der Tann (9 Bav.Bde, 16 Bav Division)  - 18th June’17 – July’18

Served in Ypres Salient, Dutch border, Artois, Hindenberg Line, Somme , Flanders.  Major battles – 3rd Ypres, Cambrai, Kaiserschlacht, Somme, Lys.

9th July 1917 – Awarded Bavarian Military Merit Order 4th Class (Militär-Verdienstorden 4.Klasse)

21st May 1918 – Awarded Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1.Klasse)

                            

 

Death:

Killed whilst serving with the BIR 11 on
28th July 1918 (Dranoutre sector) at 3:45am by a rifle grenade fragment to the left temple. Originally buried at the Militärfriedhof Wervick.  Now buried in the deutsche Soldatenfriedhof at Menen ( Block G,  Grave 1568).
