1914 Star

Awarded to those who served in France and Belgium between 5th August and 22nd November 1914. A clasp was also authorised for wear on the ribbon of those who had come under fire during this period.

1914-1915 Star

Awarded to those who had seen service in any theatre of war between 5th August 1914 and 31st December 1915 other than those who qualified for the 1914 Star.

British War Medal

Instituted to record the successful conclusion of the war.Also covers 1919-20 for mine clearing operations and service in Russia,Baltic, Siberia,the Black Sea and the Caspian. To be eligable the recipient had to have served overseas.

Issued mainly to Chinese, Indian and Maltese Labour battalions

Mercantile Marine Medal

Awarded to members of the Merchant navy who had undertaken one or more voyages through a danger zone.

Silver War Badge

Not a medal as such, but was awarded to members of the armed forces who had been invalided out for whatever reason. It was worn on the lapel of civilian clothes.

Territorial Force War Medal

Issued to members of the TF who had completed more than 4 years service before 30th September 1914 and who had served outside the UK between 4th August 1914 and 11th November 1918. Those members who qualified for the 1914 or 1914-15 Star were ineligable for this award.

Issued to all those in reciept of the 1914 or 1914-15 Star and most of those who were eligable for the BWM.

Memorial Plaque

Again, not a "medal" as such, but this was awarded to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in active service, or due to active service during the war.

Canadian Memorial Cross

Not a "British" medal as such, this was issued to the widows and mothers of Canadian servicemen who died during WW1.
